Professor Godswill Obioma, 55, holds a B.Sc degree in Mathematics
Education, Masters in Measurement and Evaluation, and a Doctor of
Philosophy in Measurement and Evaluation from University of Nigeria,
Nsukka. He was appointed a Professor of Mathematics Education and
Evaluation in 1991 at a young age of 36 years.
He
was the best graduating student at Alvan Ikoku College of Education
in 1975 and is credited for winning amongst others the academic
prize in Mathematics at the undergraduate level as the best
graduating student in 1979 in the Department of Education at the
University of Nigeria and the premier Vice-chancellor’s Academic
Award as the best graduating doctoral student from the University of
Nigeria.
A
fellow of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria (fman), Curriculum
Organization of Nigeria (fcon), Science Teachers Association of
Nigeria (fstan) the Nigeria Academy of Education (fnae), the
Institute of Industrial Corporate Administrator (fiice) and
International Professional Managers Association in London (fipma).
He
has attended various national and international conferences and
workshops and has to his credit over 100 publications covering a
wide range of issues including, but not limited to, Mathematics
education, and educational policy and development, in local and
international scientific learned texts and journals.
Professor Obioma has held various administrative and political
positions. He was Head of what is now the Department of Science,
Technology and Mathematics Education at the University of Jos
(1993-94); Special Assistant on Policy Monitoring and Evaluation to
the Military Administrator of Abia State (1994); Director,
Monitoring and Evaluation, National Primary Education Commission
(1994-1999); Director, Monitoring, Research and Statistics, National
Business and Technical Examination Board (2001-2003), and Special
Assistant (Programme and Policy) to the Honourable Minister of
Education (2003-2005). He also held a brief stint as acting Chief
Executive of the National Mathematical Centre (1997).
In
March 2005, he was appointed the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian
Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) a position he
holds till date. Since his assumption of duty at NERDC he has
re-engineered and repositioned the Council, and has also spearheaded
the development of the current 9-year Basic Education Curriculum,
the new National Book Policy, and the review of the National Policy
on Education and review of the Senior Secondary School Curriculum
recently approved by National Council on Education (NCE) in January
2009.
His
hobbies include lawn tennis, writing and reading poetry and
listening to gospel music. He is happily married with children.
