Academic Centers
  NERDC Academic Centres/Directorates

There are seven Academic Directorates of the Council namely:

1. Book Development
2. Curriculum Development
3. Educational Research
4. Language Development
5. Library and Informatics
6. Special Programme, and
7. Executive Secretary's Office as well as the service Directorates of Administration and Supplies and Finance and Accounts. Each Academic Centre has a number of Departments.

FUNCTIONS OF THE COUNCIL

* Book Development Centre

* Formulate and implement a national policy on book development,

* Undertake and promote book development and authorship,

ensuring the provision of adequate infrastructural facilities for book manufacture,

* Encourage the expansion of local printing and publishing industry in order to facilitate book production,

* Develop an effective book distribution sector so as to ensure a nation-wide circulation,

* Encourage the establishment of and strengthen professional associations of the book industry in Nigeria,

* Encourage and promote a reading culture through a continuous research into the needs of Nigerian readers,

* Produce Syllabuses and instructional materials,

* Develop and encourage the development of core-books on Nigerian Languages in co-operation with any other institution or organisation concerned with book development (collateral with).

Curriculum Development Centre:

* Promote the development of curricula at all levels of the educational

system, * Develop new techniques and approaches to curriculum development,

* Produce syllabuses and instructional materials,

* Carryout studies in Comparative Curriculum (collateral with),

* Organize teacher education/orientation programmes for new techniques and innovations in curriculum,

* Develop instructional materials for various languages taught in the schools,

* Set up pilot curriculum projects in educational institutions

* Educational Research Centre

* Encourage, promote and coordinate educational research programmes carried out in Nigeria,

* Identification of educational problems in Nigeria in which research is needed, and the establishment of the order of priority therefore,

* Compilation, publication or sponsorship of the publication of the results of educational research particularly in relation to Nigerian educational problems and the popularisation of such results where their recognition is in the Council's opinion of a national importance,

* Carryout studies in comparative curriculum,

* Encourage and promote reading culture through a continuous research into the needs of Nigerian readers (collateral with)

* Language Development Centre:

* Identification of language problems for the purpose of carrying out research into such problems and finding solution thereto,

* Develop and encourage the development of materials for various languages taught in schools,

* Advise and implement all policies relating to languages,

* Promote and develop Nigerian languages,

* Coordinate language development projects throughout Nigeria and prepare an overall design for language research needs both internally and through grants and subsidies to institutions, qualified agencies and organizations,

* Carryout language extension services (including teacher training and linguistic courses),

* Develop and encourage the development of core books in Nigerian languages in co-operation with any other institution or organization concerned with book development,

* Provide adequate translation facilities necessary for book development in Nigeria

* Carryout studies in Comparative Curriculum (collateral with)

* Encourage and promote a reading culture through a continuous research into the needs of Nigerian readers,

* Promote the development of curricula at all level of the educational system,

* Set-up pilot Curriculum projects in educational institutions

Library and Informatics Centre

* Periodical compilation and publication of a list of completed research projects,

* Establishment and maintenance of a research and development library to which new educational books and other related publications may be deposited,

* Serve as center for the exchange of information on books and all related issues,

* Encourage and promote a reading culture through a continuous research into the needs of Nigerian readers (collateral with).

Special Programmes Centre

* Maintain relationship with corresponding educational research and development centers in Nigeria and other countries,

* Promote the development of curricula at all levels of the educational system

* Carryout studies in comparative curriculum,

* Set-up pilot curriculum projects in educational institutions,

* Organize teacher educational projects in educational institutions,

* Provide syllabuses and instructional materials

* The Executive Secretary's Office

* Encouragement of research into educational problems and for that purpose, to undertake, commission, incorporate and finance such research projects as the council thinks fit,

* Assessment, surveying or investigation of educational matters considered necessary, either independently or in co-operation with individuals, organizations or agencies,

* Sponsor national and international educational conferences as may be relevant to the functions of the Council under the Decree

* Maintain relationship with corresponding educational research and development bodies in Nigeria and in other countries

* Carryout such other activities likely to assist in the performance of the functions imposed on the council under this Decree.
