Since inception in 1988, NERDC has
vigorously pursued its statutory responsibilities and mandate, with
notable progress and achievements that reached a crescendo with
development, printing and dissemination of the 9 – Year Basic
Education Curriculum (BEC) for effective implementation of the
Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme. The new 9-year Basic
Education Curriculum (BEC), which covers a total of 20 Primary and
Junior Secondary School (JSS) subjects, was developed in consonance
with National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS)
targets and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The new 9-Year
Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) has also been adapted for learners
with visual impairment. In addition, the Council also prepared the
following implementation materials to assist teachers in teaching
the curriculum:

Teachers Handbook for BEC
Implementation (Primary school edition)Teachers handbook for BEC
Implementation (JSS edition)

Teachers Handbook for the
implementation of the adapted BEC for special needs

Instructional sign Language Textbook
for Nigerian Schools (comprising of 3000 sign languages) for the
teaching of the hearing impaired.

of Instructional Materials from Local Resources

Teachers Handbook for the Selection
and Use of Instructional Materials Developed Training Manual on
Instructional Materials Development and Use for ERC
personnel

Prepared Teachers guides for Basic
Science, Basic Technology, and Computer studies/ICT, Basic
Science and Technology and Business Studies.
NERDC is currently pursuing aggressive
Train - the - Trainers workshops on the use of the BEC
implementation materials. State Ministries of Education (SMoEs),
State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs), Civil Society
organisations (CSOs), etc. participated in the training. The
training which is an on-going activity is to improve the competence
and confidence of teachers in the teaching of the new curriculum.
The re-engineering efforts of the present management transformed
NERDC once more to become a beehive of research and developmental
activities for the nation, a key parastatal of the Federal Ministry
of education and with the following significant transformational
progress and achievements:
