The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) is
one of the parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Education.
It was established in 1988 by Decree No. 53 (now Act No.
53) which merged four research and development bodies – Nigerian
Educational Research Council, Comparative Education Study and
Adaptations Centre, Nigerian Book Development Council and Nigeria
Language Centre into one organization.
Before the incumbent Executive Secretary, four others had come on
board; Professor Godswill Obioma assumed office on March 7, 2005.
The legal mandate of NERDC include curriculum and book development,
educational research, language development and other related
educational developmental activities which it has been carrying on
well up till date.
One thing is however obvious, the dexterity with which Professor
Obioma is pursuing the mandate of the Council since his assumption
of office is unequalled and unparalleled as NERDC has become
stronger and virile.
The Council has also become a household name in the continent thanks
to the newly introduced 9-year Basic Education Curriculum (BEC).
Having Professor Obioma at the helms of affairs of the Council is
having a round peg in a round hole.
On appointment, the new management under his able leadership
initiated the process of re-engineering and repositioning the
Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC). The
process was underscored by the desire to be part of the government’s
reform agenda; using educational research and development as the
driving force.
The re-engineering efforts of the present Nigerian Educational
Research and Development Council (NERDC) leadership galvanized the
Council back to life and put back on track as a pioneer of
innovations and inventions for educational development.
