* Infusion of Capital Market Studies Curriculum (CMSC) in Relevant School Curricula
The CMSC Curriculum developed by NERDC was approved at the 51st NCE meeting, Minna 2004. As is the case with all non-school subject curricula, the CMSC is to be infused into the relevant school subjects at the Primary and Secondary School levels. Funds have already been provided by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This activity is awaiting implementation.
Infusion of Road Safety Principles and Practices Curriculum
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has approached NERDC with draft of the Road Safety Principles and Practices Curriculum meant for infusion into the primary school curricula. The costing has been sent to the FRSC. We are awaiting their response.
Workshop on ICT Skills

* Printing and Distribution of Primary School Curricula in
Partnership with EFA.
* Review of Core Primary Textbooks also in partnership with
EFA.
Need Survey on the Relevance and Implementability of the National Policy on Education
The proposal and the strategic work plan on the above research have been prepared along with the development of the research instruments. EFA is partnering with the Council on this:
Development of 9 Year Basic Education Curriculum
The mine year basic education curriculum is to be developed by NERDC in partnership with UBEC and the World Bank.
* Translation of NEPAD Framework into readable English and
major Nigerian Languages
* Development of Census Curriculum is to be undertaken in
partnership with the National Population Commission
UPCOMING PRIORITY ACTIVITIES FUNDED BY THE COUNCIL
* Language Survey
At the NCE Yenagoa 2003, NERDC was urged to produce the Language Map of the Country Nigeria. The constraint had been the completion of the Language Survey Project. NERDC has made this a priority project and hopes to survey the remaining four states before the end of the year 2005.
* National Workshop on Educational Research Methods
In line with the repositioning and re-engineering process of the Council, the title of the National Workshop on Educational Research has been modified to read "National Training Workshop on New Initiatives on Strategic Educational Research". Preliminary work including the development of Training Manual for carrying out this workshop has been concluded. Fund is now being awaited for the execution of the workshop.
These activities listed in paragraphs 5 and 6 will not be completed by the end of the third quarter.
CHALLENGES
* Lack of ICT facilities to work with e.g. computers, Internet, etc.
* Insufficient office facilities, e.g. photocopies, files cabinets, office furniture, etc.
* Lack of project vehicles for smooth operation
* Staff re-training on research methods
* Lack of staff exchange programmes with parallel institutions
* Virtualization of Council's Research Library
Conclusion:
The NERDC, in its present drive to refocus its activities and strategize towards achieving a result-oriented performance, requires sufficient funds for the execution of her various projects. This will enable us remain relevant in our contributions to the development of education in our great country, Nigeria. |
